New addition to the team!

Our newest beekeeper, one of our Regional Manager’s 2-year-old grandson, is suited up and ready to go! Bee season is upon us – since 2006 there has been a drastic reduction in bee colonies in North America for honeybees, bumble bees and other wild bees. Bees and other beneficial insects pollinate plants, allowing them to reproduce. We can help by planting wildflowers and raising awareness and resources to help fund important research and support efforts that improve bees natural habitats.

Abell Beekeeping Season 3

Unfortunately, a number of our hives did not survive the winter 🙁 This was sadly the case for many other beekeepers as well. In the US, a record high 40% of honeybee colonies were lost this past winter according to The Ontario Beekeepers Association. Trevor, Abell Route Manager in Ottawa, reported that he lost his hive. Abell is Kicking Off Honey Bee Season!

With the summer approaching, the Abell team is preparing for Honey Bee season! To start a new hive, beekeepers purchase a “nuc” (nucleus) from a local beekeeper. A nucleus is a smaller version of a normal beehive which might contain a queen bee or contains the eggs and the worker bees create a new queen.
