Abell Route Manager Shawn from St. Thomas, Ontario, will once again enter Abell’s history books by ‘growing’ a ‘beard of bees’ later this summer to bring awareness to and raise funds for Cystic Fibrosis.
Shawn has always been a bit of a daredevil with his fundraising initiatives, and given what he does for a living, believes this is a great way to raise money for a good cause.
How does he do it?
Every colony has a queen bee, and all the bees recognize the queen by smell. Shawn will put a queen bee in a small plastic cage and tie it around his neck. Bees from the colony will smell the queen and cluster around her creating a beard on Shawn’s face.
Shawn is a member of Kin Canada, an all-Canadian service organization made up of dedicated member volunteers who serve their community’s greatest need through hosting and sponsoring events and community service projects. He has been a member for more than 10 years and participates in many fundraising events for great causes. Kin Canada officially adopted cystic fibrosis as its National Service Project in 1987.
The mission of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is to cure cystic fibrosis and to provide all people with CF the opportunity to lead long, fulfilling lives by funding research and drug development, partnering with the CF community, and advancing high-quality, specialized care.
